CLARA BRÖRMANN @ ECHO | 25 YEARS OF DKS
JULY 16 – OCTOBER 17, 2025
DOROTHEA-KONWIARZ-STIFTUNG, BERLIN-CHARLOTTENBURG
CURATED BY CORA WASCHKE
Twenty-five years after the founding of the Dorothea Konwiarz Foundation, seven former scholarship holders were invited to select paintings by the founder and exhibit them alongside their own works in the DKS Gallery.
The result is a selection that reflects Dorothea Konwiarz's very different creative phases: from the drawing studies from Konwiarz's training period around 1950 at the Master School for Arts and Crafts in Berlin, to the dark ink paintings from the 1960s, to the apocalyptic watercolors of the Hijacking series, created after Konwiarz's hijacking on the Lufthansa plane in Landshut.
These works are juxtaposed with drawings by Kerstin Podbiel and Emeli Theander, paintings by Clara Brörmann, Carola Ernst, Fee Kleiß, and Nouchka Wolf, and photographs by Marta Djourina, created in a painterly manner.
The ECHO exhibition is complemented by paintings from Konwiarz's time as a student at the HfbK (now the Berlin University of the Arts) and stage designs for the television quiz show Der Große Preis.
"My abstract paintings and their geometric forms have a body of their own. The images do not appear flat, but rather like objects in space – or like a physical counterpart. For me, color plays a spatial, almost sculptural role. At the same time, the painting, which develops in process, allows the viewer a diverse, multidimensional experience. Over a period of months, I create multi-layered and materially present paintings: I construct and discard, paint over or remove paint. Through construction and deconstruction, I arrive at a unity of form, color, and material. The step-by-step working process is simultaneously made visible to the viewer: lively lines, offset areas of color, and the gradients of work traces guide the eye through the pictorial planes" - Clara Brörmann
