ISHMAEL RANDALL-WEEKS
TIZA
MAY 30 - JULY 5, 2025
GALLERY NOSCO, BRUSSELS
The exhibition’s title, Tiza—meaning “chalk” and originating from Nahuatl, the ancient language of the Aztecs—serves as both a literal and metaphorical anchor for the show. Chalk is explored here as a tool for thought processes, expression, and erasure, a medium that is simultaneously fragile and foundational. From the classroom blackboard to the architectural marking line, chalk functions as a symbol of knowledge, impermanence, and latent possibility.
In Tiza, Randall-Weeks deepens this dual symbolism by treating earth as tool, material as language, and space as a mutable surface on which meaning is continuously built and dismantled. The works—ranging from sculptural installations to reliefs made from reclaimed materials such as concrete, plaster, wood, and industrial fragments—reflect his deep interest in the cycles of construction and collapse, and in the transient marks we leave behind.
At the heart of the exhibition lies a meditation on the architecture of ideas, how structures are conceived, inhabited, and undone. Randall-Weeks approaches the gallery space as a site of conceptual excavation, where materials carry memory and matter becomes metaphor. These quiet, grounded forms evoke the tension between presence and absence, action and erasure, construction and decay.
Rooted in the artist’s experience of navigating cultural and geographic boundaries between Peru, Mexico, and the United States, Tiza is an invitation into a space of reflection—where earth becomes instrument, silence becomes form, and the ephemeral gains shape.
