Special event in collaboration with COIMA

On the occasion of the three days of CONTEMPORANEA the Rome Gallery weekend, Federica Schiavo Gallery presents - in collaboration with COIMA - MIND AND BODY BODY AND MIND a work by Salvatore Arancio.

MIND AND BODY BODY AND MIND (2017), is a video presented for the first time at the 57th Venice Biennale curated by Christine Macel.

The video, like the performance with the same title commissioned by Whitechapel (London) in 2016, is inspired by a tutorial discovered by the artist on the web which showed how to implement one’s creative skills (literally how to “become better artists”) after a hypnosis’ session. The paradoxical and ironic aspect of the do-it-yourself video with divinatory claims struck the imagination of the artist who reconstructed its hallucinatory and psychedelic dimension in a video/performance which, presenting itself as a hypnosis-therapy session, promises to transform participants into artists.

“The idea that a hypnotherapy session could enhance somebody’s artistic skills, immediately struck me as a rather humorous, tongue-in-cheek take on what it means to be an artist and the function of art education, but also potentially a great and simple way to improve the world.” (Salvatore Arancio)

Salvatore investigates the presence of parallel, alternative and uncontrolled universes that live silently concealed, alongside common everyday life. Even non-lucid mental states, such as trance, fall within a dimension of meta-reality that opens up to new outcomes. Such a phenomenology of events, produced both by man and nature, escapes the rules of rationality, producing sublime non-sense, at times ironic, at other times more disturbing, but all expressions of the feeling of the extraordinary.
