Benoît Maire

Working across a wide range of media, including sculpture, photography, writing, film, and performance, Benoît Maire constructs an aesthetic system in which words, materials, and concepts emerge through visual and sculptural devices. His practice intertwines art and philosophy, making theory an autonomous form of art. While rooted in a rigorous conceptual approach, the artist maintains a constant engagement with the formal qualities of the work. His work draws on history, art history, philosophy, psychoanalysis, mathematics, and mythology, reconfiguring them within a stratified visual language.

Benoît Maire was born in Pessac, France, in 1978. He lives and works in Bordeaux. Maire has held solo exhibitions in France and abroad (Bordeaux, Paris, Brussels, London, Vancouver, San Francisco, Mexico City, New York), and his works are included in the collections of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Vancouver Art Gallery, Villa Medici in Rome, the Mudac in Lausanne, the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco, the FRAC Île-de-France in Paris, the FRAC Aquitaine in Bordeaux, the FRAC Franche-Comté in Besançon, the FNAC – Fonds National d’Art Contemporain in Paris, the Kadist Foundation in Paris, the David Roberts Foundation in London, the Nomas Foundation and the Fondazione Giuliani in Rome, the Francès Foundation in Senlis, as well as the MAC/VAL in Vitry-sur-Seine and the CAPC Musée in Bordeaux.
